Walking Between Cultures

What is The Sun Child
The Sun Child was conceived by Harold Gray (Long Standing Bear Chief), a member of the Blackfeet Tribe, as an educational newspaper aimed at teaching Native American schoolchildren about the history and culture of their various tribes.

Along with Charles Courchene, an Assiniboine, Gray first published The Sun Child in 1979. Before it was forced to cease publishing in 1981 due to lack of funds, it was being read in schools, both tribal and non-tribal, in over 30 states.
The editors of The Sun Child would like to thank all those who provided feedback on the first six weeks of the publication. To show our appreciation, we would like to make the next six weeks available to those who responded.
Help Us Revive and Lead a Legacy of Native American Voices
The SunChild has been a vital source of Native American history, culture, and storytelling. Now, we’re looking for a passionate, dedicated individual to carry on this important work.
The ideal candidate will have a background in journalism, communications, or education, with a strong understanding of Native American issues and culture. They will be inspired by the mission of The Sun Child and eager to contribute to its continued success, helping to maintain its legacy of showcasing Native American perspectives, stories, and histories.
In this role, you will be responsible for updating the website, maintaining the archives, and posting new content—including articles, images, and stories shared by our community. Additionally, we hope for you to secure grants to keep the newsletter freely accessible to educators and others who benefit from this resource.
If you have the skills, experience, and passion for making a meaningful impact, we want to hear from you.
