Walking Between Cultures
What is The Sun Child
The Sun Child was conceived by Harold Gray (Long Standing Bear Chief), a member of the Blackfeet Tribe, as an educational newspaper aimed at teaching Native American schoolchildren about the history and culture of their various tribes.
Along with Charles Courchene, an Assiniboine, Gray first published The Sun Child in 1979. Before it was forced to cease publishing in 1981 due to lack of funds, it was being read in schools, both tribal and non-tribal, in over 30 states.
Currently, the editors are not tribal members, but we would like to be able to revive the publication and put it once again in the hands of a Native American willing assist with the project, possibly a retired teacher or someone with experience obtaining grants. There is definitely a need today for providing accurate information about America’s tribes and their history and culture.
The editors of The Sun Child would like to thank all those who provided feedback on the first six weeks of the publication. To show our appreciation, we would like to make the next six weeks available to those who responded.
